30 years of Popples by Trey-Vore 30 years of Popples by Trey-Vore
This is one of several overdue 80s tributes I had coming.

Starting as a line of greeting cards, Popples would later become a line of stuffed dolls and then a live-action special directed by Shelley Duvall.  After that special was well-received, a cartoon series would follow.  This series was animated by DIC and LBS Communications.

The Popples were like Care Bears in some ways, though we can chalk that up as they were both owned by the same company.  The gimmick behind the toy was they can fold inside their pouches.  They act like imaginary friends to a human brother and sister, Billy and Bonnie Wagner, and were curious about the world around them.  They also have an ability to reach into their pouches to pull things out of Hammerspace.  Their antics would go out of proportion, but usually it would turn out for the best.

These nine characters were the first set of Popples featured in the first season.  Their names are Pretty Cool (aka 'PC', the large blue one), Pancake (right of PC), Party (right of Pancake, also series mascot), Puffball (inside PC's pouch), Prize (in front of PC), Puzzle (orange one behind Pancake), Pretty Bit (sitting above PC), Putter (green one in front of Party) and Potato Chip (yellow one sitting above Party).

I own the series on bootleg DVD thanks to ontherunvideo.com, who I became familiar with thanks to the Wizard World Comic Con.  Also curious about the new show.

Happy 30th to Popples!
